Big Win for Farm Peonies

It was a record year for the Central Experimental Farm Peony Collection at the 2010 National Peony Show, June 12-13, at the Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens.  The CEF earned 7 first, 1 second, 3 third, and 9 fourth - place ribbons at the annual event that draws competitors from across Canada.  And for the first time since the Friends of the Experimental Farm have been entering the show, a CEF peony made it to the Court of Honour.  Winner in the common garden peony, single class, "Imperial Red" vied with 10 other first-in-their-class peonies for the title of Grand Champion.  Although "Imperial Red" lost out, it received a special certificate of merit for making it to the prestigious Court of Honour.  The Friends of the Farm Peony Team proudly presented the certificate to Jean-Pascal (JP) Gratton, Supervisor of the CEF Arboretum and Ornamental Gardens.

The tremendous showing by the CEF peonies is even more noteworthy when you consider the painstaking preparation process undertaken by the Friends of the Farm Peony Team.  The blooms must be picked in the late bud stage, tagged, and refrigerated until show time.  The process is repeated once or twice a week to catch the different varieties at the right point of ripening.  The buckets are stored in a cooler in Building 72, and transported to the show in picnic coolers.  At the show, there's some last-minute housekeeping - removing any unsightly leaves or stem marks and cutting the stem to a standard length - before each bloom makes it to the appropriate judging table.

Donations from Friends

by Phyllis McCord

Unknown White
This is a peony from my backyard.

Over the past few years as I have begun my garden, I have been given plants and roots whose identities have long been forgotten. While it doesn’t lessen my enjoyment I am looking forward to learning all about them!

Lee Valley Grafting Tool

 by Ron Adams

After doing more than thirty grafts with the new grafting tool from Lee Valley (commented on "Planting, Care, Seeds & Drying, Cutting & Storage section) I am not so sure of its efficacy.  The tool will only make an incision of 3/8" which presents a challenge when holding the scion and rootstock together and binding the parafilm over the join.  At first I was attempting to graft alone but after many trials found that an extra pair of hands to hold the scion and rootstock together allowed me to bind the parafilm much tighter and thereby obtain a better fit.
The limitations that I encountered were that the largest diameter that the tool could accommodate was 5/8" with the wedge method one is usually dealing with a depth of an inch or more whereas this tool's depth is only 3/8".  Another limitation was the difficulty in trying to sterilize the tool.  The blade is inside the sliding mechanism and troublesome to clean also the blade became tarnished and rusty overnight in spite of efforts to clean and dry it.
In conclusion I do not feel confident that the grafts will "take" but who knows maybe next spring I will be pleasantly surprised and rewarded with a few grafted peonies.  Will report back next year.

I hit this website www.pivoinescapano.com and was surprised to find that a peony nursery was selling cupcakes created and named after peonies.
Very cool marketing idea.  Wish you all the success with this new venture.

Is It Hot Enough for You?

So far the sweltering heat befalling Ontario has not affected the plants too much.  With 5 to 6 days of 30 something temps and humidity making it feel like its in the 40's make sure that you keep your plants hydrated.  With the AC running 24/7 I have been using the water it collects to water the plants inside and out.  When the AC was installed 17 years ago we had the guy hook up the drain hose into a collection tank so I could use it on the houseplants.  It's really come in handy.
How is the weather in your area?  What are you doing to beat the heat?

Renkaku "Flight of Cranes"

Renkaku, Japanese Tree Peony, aka Flight of Cranes - approximately 10 - 15 years old now, and is about 4 and half feet high and 3 and half feet wide; more flowers (each about 8 inches in diameter) every year and one of my friends commented the flowers dont look real, but look like those delicate tissue paper flowers we used to make as kids; also the buds are really large and quite lovely before they come out into full bloom; cut flower lasts a few days if cut stem short about 2 inches below the actual flower and water replenished daily as is quite thirsty; it is planted under a large tree in my white garden and it gets a mix of sun and shade; I only give it some manure and cover base with the usual wood chip mulch every couple of years, so quite hardy, as I dont have time for fussy plants; as my home is on the waterfront trail, I often have people take pics of it and leave me prints; a lot of people dont know what it is, as tree peonies are not as well known as herbaceous peonies, but when they ask and I explain about it, many ask where to buy them - too bad they are not more well known and available, as they provide a showstopper of blooms and are invariably at their best 3-5 days before a big rain storm!
