When we arrived at the Royal Botanical Garden it was a flurry of activity.  A rain barrel vendor was in the parking lot setting up an outdoor booth.

We were kept very busy Friday night and all day  Saturday and Sunday answering questions about Peonies &amp; had fun promoting  the Peony Festival with the CPS Ontario Region Show at the Oshawa Valley  Botanical Garden on June 11-12, 2011. They had over 8,000 visitors last year and  attendance was up this year.

Unfortunately, we were in the middle of the room with no place to put a banner, so it was not exactly a picturesque situation.

Very nice atmosphere!  The weather was pretty lousy in the AM but it was fairly well attended.

I have never attended one of our AGM’s, and after serious thought decided it was time. By the end of the weekend I did not regret my decision.

Illini Belle is a beautiful ruby red, semi double that blooms early and is a cross between P.lactiflora x P. officinalis.  It has symmetrical glossy blooms, with purple stamen filaments and pale green carpels with pink stigmata.  This variety needs staking when mature.  Grows to 32".  Hybridizer is Glasscock 1941.

It is the first week of February here in my part of the country.  The temperatures are 50F+, the robins have returned and the grass that turned brown last fall has begun to show green.

William Saunders

 William Saunders, the first Director of the CEF, brought the first peonies
to the Farm in the 1890's and began testing. 

Perhaps the most prolific of both herbaceous and tree peonies of all times

Most of the peonies we have in our gardens bloom long after lilacs have finished. It is interesting to note, therefore, that there is a whole range of peonies that do bloom when the late lilacs are in their glory. Using these peonies can add a whole different look to our “painting with flowers.”

The Devonian Botanic Garden (DBG) in Devon, Alberta (near Edmonton) has a sizeable collection of herbaceous and species peonies, most of which were donated by Cyril M. Clarke in the late 1940s. This collection includes a number of now-rare cultivars, and provides us with a fascinating glimpse into the history of peony cultivation in Alberta.

THE PEONY GARDEN

The Oshawa Valley Botanical Gardens is made up of several linked specialty gardens. The Peony Garden is the first OVBG Specialty Garden to be completed. Located at 155 Arena Street, it is conveniently situated in close proximity to both Parkwood Estate and the Oshawa Creek trail.

Visitors can't help but stop in front of the small mound of dissected foliage covered with large flowers like pink anemones.  "What is it?" A peony.  "Are you sure?" Positive, Paeonia veitchii, that's it.  But I sense a certain disbelieve. "Yes but.... that plant has single flowers and the foliage doesn't look anything like that of a peony".  Let me explain.
